Aizawl Tragedy: Stone Quarry Collapse

In the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, which wreaked havoc across Mizoram, a tragic incident occurred at Aizawl's Melthum and Hlimen border. Around 6 am on May 28, a stone quarry collapsed, resulting in the deaths of 7 individuals.

However, amidst the sorrow, there was a glimmer of hope as one child was rescued from the debris and swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Sadly, many other workers believed to be non-tribals remain trapped, and efforts to locate and rescue them are ongoing. Among the deceased, three are reported to be non-Mizos. The collapse of the quarry also destroyed several nearby houses, exacerbating the impact of the tragedy.

Apart from the quarry collapse, the cyclone also triggered a massive landslide, blocking the Lengpui Airport and disrupting transportation in the region. Additionally, over 20 community cemeteries collapsed, compounding the challenges faced by local communities.

The effects of the cyclone extended beyond infrastructure damage, with reports of the Tlawng River swelling and flooding homes in the Sairang locality. The rapid water flow also resulted in the loss of livestock, with pigs swept away in the Tlangnuam locality.

Cyclone Remal made landfall along the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal on May 26 night, bringing heavy rains and powerful winds. Its subsequent movement towards northeastern parts of the country left a trail of destruction in its wake.
