Breaking Records: How Did Jasprit Bumrah Become the Fastest Indian Pacer to 200 Test Wickets?

The leader of India's bowling attack, Jasprit Bumrah on December 29 scripted history at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as he became the fastest Indian to 200 Test wickets in terms of balls taken. Bumrah reached the milestone from the 8,484th ball of his Test career.

The top spot belongs to Pakistan's Waqar Younis (7,725 balls) followed by South Africa's Dale Steyn (7,848 balls) and Kagiso Rabada (8,154 balls).


Bumrah is the fastest Indian pacer to take 200 Test wickets in terms of games taken as well. This was Bumrah's 44th Test appearance. Kapil Dev held the previous record from 50 Tests. Overall, he is the third-fastest Indian bowler. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja achieved the feat in 37 and 44 Tests respectively.


Best bowling average

Meanwhile, Bumrah has also registered the best bowling average for a bowler with 200 Test wickets or more. Bumrah is bowling average is nearly 19.4. He is followed by West Indies' Malcolm Marshall (20.94), Joel Garner (20.97) and Curtly Ambrose (20.99). For India, Ashwin has the next-best bowling average of 24 closely followed by Jadeja (24.08).

Bumrah breaks all-time BGT record

Bumrah also broke the record for most wickets by a pacer in a single edition of Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Ben Hilfenhaus held the previous record with 27 wickets in 2011/12 series at an average of 17.22 including two fifers. Bumrah surpassed him with a bowling average just above 12. He went past Ashwin as well who took 29 wickets from four Tests in 2012/13 season. Harbhajan Singh is on top with 32 wickets from three Tests in 2000/01 series.


On Day 4 of the Boxing Day Test, Bumrah rushed through Australian middle-order. First, he struck with the new ball to knock over young opener Sam Konstas for a single-digit score. He came back into the attack and got rid of an in-form Travis Head with a short ball. He did not let Mitchell Marsh settle and dismissed him for a four-ball duck. He continued to attack the stumps and knocked over Alex Carey.
