Grievance Addressal: Centre Engages in Dialogue on Hit-and-Run Legislation Amid Truckers' Protest

Truck, bus and tanker operators in several states on Monday launched an agitation to protest stricter punishments in the new law on hit-and-run cases. Amid the nationwide strike, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla is set to chair a high-level meeting today, as per sources. The transporters union will be part of the meeting.

The protest is being held over the provision of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which will replace the Indian Penal Code. Under the new criminal law, drivers who cause serious road accidents due to negligent driving and run away without informing authorities face up to 10 years in prison

Drivers and truckers expressed dissatisfaction against the stringent provision. On Monday, truck drivers in Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, and Punjab held agitations against the new law.

Road blockades were also seen in several places as truckers continued their protest on Tuesday.

The protest led to long queues being witnessed at petrol pumps due to panic over fear of disrupted fuel supply in various cities.
