groundbreaking study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, researchers have unveiled compelling evidence regarding the mental health benefits of hot yoga, specifically Bikram yoga practised in a 105°F room. The research indicates that engaging in this intense form of yoga can significantly reduce depressive symptoms, offering a non-medication–based approach for individuals struggling with depression.
The study, conducted over eight weeks, involved 80 participants divided into two groups: one group practised 90 minutes of Bikram yoga twice a week, while a control group did not engage in hot yoga. Despite initial hesitations, participants who attended an average of 10.3 classes experienced a noteworthy reduction in depressive symptoms.
Key Findings
Participants practising hot yoga witnessed a substantial decrease in depressive symptoms, surpassing the control group.
More than half of the yoga participants experienced a 50% or greater reduction in depressive symptoms, highlighting the effectiveness of this intervention.
Remarkably, 44% of participants achieved remission from depression, signifying a significant improvement in their mental well-being.
Even participants attending just one class per week reported a noticeable decrease in depressive symptoms, emphasising the potential benefits for individuals with limited time or motivation.
