Hot Yoga vs. Regular Yoga: Which is Better for Depression?"

groundbreaking study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, researchers have unveiled compelling evidence regarding the mental health benefits of hot yoga, specifically Bikram yoga practised in a 105°F room. The research indicates that engaging in this intense form of yoga can significantly reduce depressive symptoms, offering a non-medication–based approach for individuals struggling with depression.

The study, conducted over eight weeks, involved 80 participants divided into two groups: one group practised 90 minutes of Bikram yoga twice a week, while a control group did not engage in hot yoga. Despite initial hesitations, participants who attended an average of 10.3 classes experienced a noteworthy reduction in depressive symptoms.

Key Findings

  • Participants practising hot yoga witnessed a substantial decrease in depressive symptoms, surpassing the control group.

  • More than half of the yoga participants experienced a 50% or greater reduction in depressive symptoms, highlighting the effectiveness of this intervention.

  • Remarkably, 44% of participants achieved remission from depression, signifying a significant improvement in their mental well-being.

  • Even participants attending just one class per week reported a noticeable decrease in depressive symptoms, emphasising the potential benefits for individuals with limited time or motivation.
