The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for very heavy rain in four districts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, as a low-pressure area is expected to form in the southeast Bay of Bengal on Monday, December 16.
The Meteorological Department has stated that, due to the prevailing atmospheric circulation in the South Andaman Sea, it is likely to strengthen into a low-pressure area on Monday and move towards Tamil Nadu in a west-northwesterly direction over the next two days.
As a result, moderate rain is likely to continue in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Monday. An orange alert has been issued for very heavy rain in Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore districts on Tuesday.
The Meteorological Department has also warned of heavy rain in Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Tiruchirappalli, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Chengalpattu districts, and Puducherry.
The day after tomorrow, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Puducherry are expected to receive very heavy rain, with heavy rain likely to occur in isolated areas of Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu districts, and Karaikal.
The Meteorological Department has also stated that the sky in Chennai will be cloudy, with light rain possible at a few locations.
It has also advised fishermen not to venture into the coastal areas of southern Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Kumarikadal areas, as gusts of wind up to 55 kilometres per hour are expected.
