The Pakistan cricket team continued their dream start to Mohammad Rizwan's captaincy tenure in the ODI format after defeating South Africa by 36 runs in the third ODI at the New Wanderers Stadium on Sunday (December 22) to seal a 3-0 series victory over the Proteas.
After losing the T20I series 2-0, the Men in Green dominated the ODI series by registering three emphatic victories. Saim Ayub won the Player of the Series (POTS) award for scoring two centuries in three games. This victory comes a month after Pakistan won an ODI series against Australia in Australia by a 2-1 margin.
So far, Rizwan has led Pakistan in six ODIs and won five of them. The 32-year-old is the first Pakistan captain in history to win an ODI series in both South Africa and Australia
Pakistan Create History
With their incredible victory in South Africa, Pakistan wrote their name in the history books and became the first team to whitewash South Africa in an ODI series in South Africa. Earlier, the 1992 World Champions became only the second team in history to win three ODI series against the Proteas in the rainbow nation, alongside Australia.
Apart from Australia and Pakistan, India is the only other team in history to win multiple ODI series in South Africa, having won a series in 2018-19. The Men in Green won an ODI series against South Africa in 2013 and 2021. The Proteas lost a home series against Australia in 1997, 2002, and 2011.
England, West Indies, and New Zealand have won one series each in South Africa in the ODI format.
The two teams will now face each other in a two-match Test series from December 26.
South Africa and Pakistan are set to face each other in ODI cricket again in less than two months as they will play a tri-series (alongside New Zealand) in Pakistan in February. This tournament will be played just a few days before the 2025 Champions Trophy.
