Remembering the Legacy of Veteran Tamil Actor Delhi Ganesh: A Tribute to His Life and Work

Veteran Tamil actor Delhi Ganesh passed away. He was 80. He died of age-related ailments. The actor’s son Maha Devan confirmed the news of his death. Taking to social media, Devan shared the heartbreaking news. “We deeply regret to inform that our father Dr Delhi Ganesh has passed away on 9th November 2024 at around 11 pm (sic),” he wrote. Fans took to social media and offered their condolences. “One of the greatest actor in tamil film industry. RIP sir,” a fan wrote. “RIP Sir, My favourite was his voice over for Swami Character’s father in Malgudi Days (Swami and friends),” another fan remembered him. “Great actor, deepest condolences to their family,” a third user wrote on X. Delhi Ganesh began his acting career after he worked with the Indian Air Force for ten years, from 1964 to 1974. His stage name, Delhi Ganesh, was given by acclaimed director K Balachander. The filmmaker gave Ganesh his break in the Tamil film industry with Pattina Pravesam, in 1976. He went on to star in 400 movies thereafter. The actor starred in several hit projects. His best works included Sindhu Bhairavi (1985), Nayakan (1987), Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989), Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990), and Thenali (2000). He also explored interesting roles in Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi film industry. He was last seen in Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2. In 2021, Delhi Ganesh confessed starring Kamal Haasan’s films paved the way for his success in the industry. “I am fond of all the films I have done with Kamal Haasan; I think they fetched me the most recognition. Avvai Shanmughi, Thenali, Michael Madana Kama Rajan, and Apoorva Sagodharargal are some films that come to mind. Kamal gives a lot of space to actors, and he trusts you. That makes all the difference,” he told Cinema Express at the time. Delhi Ganesh was also honoured with several awards. These include the Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize in 1979 for Pasi and Kalaimamani Award in 1994.
