Shopian Militant Killing: What Happened?

A militant was killed in an early morning gunfight in south Kashmir's Shopian on Thursday, police said.

Police said the killed militant belonged to The Resistance Front (TRF), which police claims is a shadow group of Laskhkar-e-Toiba (LeT).

On early Thursday morning, a joint team of J-K Police and army cordoned off the Kathohakan village of Shopian in south Kashmir after specific intelligence inputs about presence of militants in the village.

Police officials said that as soon as the joint team of forces zeroed in on the target, the militants opened fire to break the security cordon. The joint team of forces retaliated the fire leading to a gunfight.

Police said that a TRF militant was killed in the gunfight while the searches are going on to find if there are any other militants in the area.

“ShopianEncounterUpdate: One (01) #terrorist affiliated with proscribed #terror outfit TRF neutralised. Incriminating materials including arms & ammunition recovered. Search going on. Further details shall follow,“ J-K Police posted on X.

The Kashmir valley has seen a dip in gunfights between militants and forces over the last year. Security officials say that decreasing number of militants, militants shunning the use of cell phones and a drying up human intelligence network are some of the reasons for this dip
