UPI's Global Triumph: List of Nations Embracing Indian Digital Payments

Ministry of External Affairs revealed today that Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services are now accessible in Sri Lanka and Mauritius. Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a virtual event marking the introduction of UPI and RuPay card services in these countries.

Global Payment Landscape: UPI's Influence on Cross-Border Transactions

To make UPI payments in Sri Lanka and Mauritius, users need to register their bank account with a UPI-enabled mobile app. They should enter recipient details like bank account number, transfer amount, and currency when linking their bank account.

UPI enables instant, real-time money transfers without disclosing bank details. Over the past two years, UPI usage has expanded internationally. Here’s where Indians can utilize UPI for payments:

  • Bhutan: BHIM UPI QR-based payments were introduced in collaboration with the Royal Monetary Authority (RMA) on July 13, 2021. This partnership enhances financial integration between the two economies.

  • Oman: An MoU signed between NPCI, NIPL, and the Central Bank of Oman on October 4, 2022, enables the acceptance of Indian RuPay cards at OmanNet network ATMs, POS, and E-commerce sites. It also facilitates real-time cross-border remittances between India and Oman.

  • Mauritius: Indian visitors can use UPI for local payments, while Mauritius tourists can do the same in India via the Instant Payment System (IPS) app. Additionally, banks in Mauritius can issue RuPay cards through the MauCAS card network.

  • Sri Lanka: Indian travelers can make QR code-based payments at merchant locations in Sri Lanka using their UPI apps.

  • Nepal: Nepali users can make bank transfers to India using UPI IDs through mobile banking.

  • France: The Eiffel Tower in Paris now accepts UPI payments, as announced by NPCI International Payments Limited in partnership with Lyra.

  • Southeast Asia: NIPL’s agreement with Liquid Group enables QR-based UPI payments in 10 countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.
