What Are the Legal Implications of Bengaluru Police's Action Outside Atul Subhash's Wife's UP House?

Amid widespread outrage over Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash’s suicide following mental distress and harassment by his in-laws, Bengaluru Police pasted a notice outside the residence of his wife Nikita Singhania, who is reportedly absconding after an FIR was filed.

“There are reasonable grounds to interrogate you to ascertain the facts and circumstances. You are directed to appear before the investigating officer at Bengaluru within three days,” read the notice by Bengaluru Police.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Police have arrested Atul’s mother-in-law Nisha Singhania and brother-in-law Anurag Singhania, both accused by the techie of harassment, torture, false criminal cases and extortion. Atul alleged his wife’s family had demanded Rs 3 crore as a settlement.

The sensational case of Atul Subhash’s suicide, along with a 90-minute video and a 24-page note giving details about the alleged harassment by his in-laws, has reignited debate about men’s rights and misuse of the legal system. An FIR was lodged with the Marathahalli police against Nikita’s family.

Nikita Singhania’s Family Tried To Escape After FIR

In a counter-complaint, Nikita Singhania alleged physical and mental harassment by her husband Atul and his family in her police complaint. “My husband started to beat me up after drinking alcohol and started treating the husband-wife relationship with me like a beast. He used to transfer my entire salary from my account to his account by threatening me,” her complaint stated.

However, her family reportedly went on the run as their Jaunpur residence was found locked. Karnataka Police arrested Nisha and Anurag Singhania on Thursday, while a hunt has begun for Nikita Singhania, who is reportedly absconding.

Police sources told news agency IANS that Nisha and Anurag tried to escape when they came to know that the Karnataka Police was on its way to take them into custody. However, the police gathered information about the accused and arrested them from the vicinity.

Atul’s lengthy suicide note made shocking revelations, saying his wife filed false criminal cases and demanded Rs 3 crore for a settlement and her family made numerous threats to his family that forced him to take the extreme step. He also penned a note for his four-year-old son, whom he had not seen for three years.

The suicide note, under the headline “Justice is Due”, addressing his 2-year-old child, read: “Now with me gone, there will not be any money to loot and I hope that they might start to look at the facts of the cases. Someday, you shall know the real face of your mother and her greedy family.”

He had also shared a link on X, tagging his video to CEO Elon Musk and US President-elect Donald Trump. “A dead man is requesting Elon Musk and Donald Trump to save millions of lives from woke ideologies, abortion, DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) and restore freedom of speech in India. I will be dead when you read this. A legal genocide of men happening in India currently,” the suicide note read.

His family collected his remains from the Bengaluru crematorium on Wednesday where Atul’s final rites were conducted. The family stated that the ashes would be taken to Patna, from where the family originally hails from and it will be immersed into the river as per the traditions.
