Atleast 53 people were killed and 62 injured after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in Xigaze City, located in the Xizang Autonomous Region, at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday (Beijing Time), ANI reported citing regional disaster relief authorities.
The China Earthquake Networks Centre reported the earthquake's epicenter at 28.5°N latitude and 87.45°E longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers. House collapses were reported in Tonglai Village, Changsuo Township, Dingri, in Xigaze (Shigatse), according to Xinhua.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported a series of aftershocks in Xizang, Tibet Autonomous Region, following a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck at 6:35 AM (IST) at a depth of 10 kilometers on Tuesday.
The region experienced seven aftershocks, beginning with a 4.7-magnitude tremor at 07:02 AM IST and concluding with a 4.3-magnitude tremor at 09:11 AM IST. In between, aftershocks included magnitudes of 4.9 at 07:07 AM IST, 5.0 at 07:13 AM IST, 4.9 at 07:29 AM IST, 4.8 at 07:44 AM IST, and 4.5 at 08:49 AM IST.
The earthquakes along the Nepal-China border prompted residents to evacuate to open areas. No casualties have been reported in these regions so far.
