An Indian Coast Guard helicopter, identified as an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv, crashed during a routine training sortie in Gujarat’s Porbandar on Sunday, resulting in the tragic death of three crew members. The incident was reported by news agency PTI, citing police officials.
The ALH Dhruv, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is a multi-role, twin-engine utility helicopter widely used by the Indian Armed Forces. Operational since 2002, the Dhruv is known for its versatility and is capable of performing a range of missions, including transport, search and rescue, medical evacuation, reconnaissance, and anti-submarine warfare.
The helicopter has been a critical asset for India’s defence and emergency services due to its sturdy design, reliability, and ability to operate in extreme weather conditions. It has been extensively deployed by the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Additionally, the Dhruv has been exported to countries such as Nepal, Mauritius, and the Maldives.
This crash comes just two months after another Coast Guard helicopter went down in the sea. As of now, the Coast Guard has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. Investigations into the cause of the crash are expected to be launched soon.
