The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) faction led by Ajit Pawar has announced its plans to contest the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections independently, marking its debut in the national capital's electoral politics.
The NCP leadership has reportedly finalised candidates for 25-30 constituencies, focusing on areas with diverse voter bases. Among the key names cleared are:
Burari: Ratan Tyagi
Badli: Mulayam Singh
Kirari: Sanjay Singh Prajapati
Sangam Vihar: Omar Ali Idreesi
Seelampur: Ruhi Saleem
The NCP's move to go solo is seen as an effort to establish a foothold in Delhi, where regional and national parties like the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dominate.
The NCP has contested state elections outside Maharashtra in the past. In the 2020 Delhi polls, the NCP (united) fought for five seats but won none. But this is the first time it's contesting the Delhi election after the NCP split between Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar faction in July 2023.
Delhi will go to polls in a single phase on February 5 (Wednesday), with a fierce triangular contest between the AAP, BJP and the Congress setting the political temperatures soaring in the cold wave-gripped national capital.
The results will be announced on February 8 (Saturday).
