Why are improvised explosive devices (IEDs) still a threat in modern warfare?

Two soldiers lost their lives in a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Laleali in the Akhnoor sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, the Indian Army said.

“Suspected Improvised Explosive Device blast reported in #Laleali in #Akhnoor Sector during a fence patrol resulting in two fatalities. The officials said the troops were on patrolling duty when they were hit by the powerful explosion near a forward post in the Bhattal area at around 3:50 pm.

The injured personnel were rushed to a hospital where two of them, including a captain, succumbed to their injuries, they said, adding that the condition of the other injured soldier is "out of danger".


Mortar shell defused

Earlier in the day, a mortar shell was found and subsequently defused by a bomb disposal squad in the Akhnoor sector, police officials told PTI. The mortar shell was noticed by some locals in Partap Canal near Namandar village around 10 am, the officials added.

They said a police party rushed to the scene on getting the information and later summoned a bomb disposal squad which safely defused the explosive substance.
