NEW DELHI: The crime branch of Delhi Police on Thursday arrested Harsh alias Chintu, the main shooter in a case of double murder in Najafgarh in Feb. The accused, a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang who had absconded abroad using a fake passport, was detained at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Special commissioner of police (crime) Devesh Kumar Srivastava said Harsh, along with his accomplice Sanjeev Dahiya, had killed two rival gang members, Ashish and Sonu, at a salon in Najafgarh on Feb 9. The accused had a history of enmity with the deceased and had threatened them over leaking information, said police.
A case was registered, and after police found that Dahiya and Harsh alias Chintu had absconded, they were declared proclaimed offenders by the court. A reward of Rs 50,000 was announced for information leading to their arrest. Harsh is an associate of jailed gangster Yogesh Tunda, a senior member of the Gogi gang that is in an alliance with Bishnoi.
The crime branch soon took over the investigation. Its team followed up on several leads and finally traced Harsh to Azerbaijan. Police issued a lookout circular against the accused.
Harsh told police that he was a close friend of Dahiya and was involved in several extortion cases. He had secured a fake passport from Punjab and fled to Azerbaijan via Sharjah. He was returning to India on the fake passport to arrange another when he was apprehended.
The shooters were trailing Ashish since he had come out of jail and finally cornered him at the salon. Police said the two parties had met earlier and had an argument. On the day of the incident, the two gunmen reached the salon 30-40 minutes before the shooting. Posing as customers, they inquired about the rates, etc., and left, only to return after the arrival of their targets.
In a CCTV footage, both assailants were seen brandishing pistols. One of the victims was seen sitting on the ground and pleading to a shooter with folded hands, but the latter fired multiple rounds at him.
